The Our Father Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Amen.

Origin of the Our Father

The Our Father, also known as the Lord's Prayer, was taught by Jesus Christ to His disciples. It is recorded in the Gospel of Matthew 6:9-13 and Luke 11:2-4. It is the most well-known and frequently recited prayer in Christianity worldwide.

Meaning of the Our Father

The Our Father contains seven petitions that encompass both the spiritual and material needs of humanity. The first three petitions focus on the glory of God: His name, His kingdom, and His will. The next four petitions relate to human needs: daily bread, forgiveness of sins, protection from temptation, and deliverance from evil.

How to Pray the Our Father

The Our Father can be recited privately or communally in worship. In the Catholic Mass, this prayer is said after the Eucharistic Prayer and before the Communion Rite. It is also part of other devotions such as the Rosary and the Liturgy of the Hours.

Reflection

When we pray the Our Father, we are reminded that we are all children of God and part of His family. This prayer teaches us to prioritize God's will over our personal desires, and to live in love and forgiveness toward others.
