Divine Mercy Novena

Divine Mercy Novena
12 Mei 2025

The Divine Mercy Novena is a prayer dedicated to honoring the Divine Mercy of Jesus. This novena begins on Good Friday and ends on the Saturday before Divine Mercy Sunday (the second Sunday of Easter).

History of the Divine Mercy Novena

The Divine Mercy Novena originated from the apparitions of Jesus to St. Faustina Kowalska, a Polish nun, in the 1930s. In these apparitions, Jesus asked St. Faustina to spread devotion to His Divine Mercy and gave specific instructions on how this novena should be prayed.

"I desire that during these nine days you bring souls to the fountain of My mercy, that they may draw from it strength and refreshment and whatever graces they need in the hardships of life and, especially, at the hour of death. On each day you will bring to My Heart a different group of souls, and you will immerse them in this ocean of My mercy." - Words of Jesus to St. Faustina

How to Pray the Divine Mercy Novena

The Divine Mercy Novena is prayed for nine consecutive days, beginning on Good Friday. Each day has a specific intention for a different group of souls.

Daily Prayer Structure

  1. Begin with the Sign of the Cross
  2. Pray the Opening Prayer
  3. Pray the specific intention for that day
  4. Pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet
  5. End with the Closing Prayer

The Divine Mercy Chaplet

The Divine Mercy Chaplet is prayed using regular rosary beads with the following sequence:

On the large beads (before each decade):

"Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world."

On the small beads (10x for each decade):

"For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world."

At the end of the Chaplet (after 5 decades), repeat 3x:

"Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world."

Jesus's Promises for the Divine Mercy Devotion

Through St. Faustina, Jesus gave special promises for those who honor His Divine Mercy:

  • "The soul that will venerate this image will not perish. I also promise victory over enemies already here on earth, especially at the hour of death."
  • "When they say this chaplet in the presence of the dying, I will stand between My Father and the dying person, not as the just Judge but as the Merciful Savior."
  • "Whoever will recite it will receive great mercy at the hour of death."

Divine Mercy Sunday

Divine Mercy Sunday is celebrated on the Second Sunday of Easter (the Sunday after Easter). On this day, Jesus promised complete forgiveness of sins and punishment for those who receive Holy Communion in a state of grace on that day.
