The Prayer to Saint Michael is a powerful prayer requesting protection from Saint Michael the Archangel, the commander of the heavenly host. Text of the Prayer to Saint Michael
Saint Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle,
be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host,
by the power of God,
cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits
who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen.
History of the Prayer to Saint Michael
On October 13, 1884, Pope Leo XIII experienced a terrifying vision while celebrating Mass. He saw Satan and evil spirits gathering over Rome, attempting to destroy the Catholic Church. In the vision, Saint Michael appeared and cast the demons back to hell.
After this experience, Pope Leo XIII wrote the prayer to Saint Michael and ordered that it be recited after every Low Mass throughout the world. This practice continued until 1964 after the Second Vatican Council. Although no longer routinely recited after Mass, Pope John Paul II and his successors have encouraged Catholics to continue praying it privately.
