Prayer Before Confession

O merciful God,
I humbly come before You,
Aware of my weaknesses and sins.

Enlighten my heart with the light of Your Holy Spirit,

Help me to remember all the sins
I have committed in thought, word, and deed,
As well as sins of omission in my duties.

Grant me the courage to confess my sins honestly,
Without diminishing or concealing them,
That I may receive Your forgiveness fully.

Awaken in me a deep sense of contrition,
And a firm resolve not to repeat my sins,
And to live more in accordance with Your will.

Examination of Conscience

As additional preparation, conduct an examination of conscience by asking yourself the following questions:

Relationship with God

• Have I neglected my prayer and spiritual life?
• Have I doubted or denied my faith?
• Have I used God's name disrespectfully?
• Have I missed Mass on Sundays or holy days of obligation without a valid reason?

Relationship with Others

• Have I failed to respect my parents or authorities?
• Have I hurt others through my words or actions?
• Have I harbored hatred, envy, or grudges against others?
• Have I been dishonest, stolen, or damaged others' property?
• Have I gossiped or defamed others' reputation?

Relationship with Self

• Have I been proud, selfish, or greedy?
• Have I allowed lust, anger, or laziness to control me?
• Have I neglected to care for my physical and spiritual health?

The Importance of the Sacrament of Confession

The Sacrament of Confession is a privileged opportunity to experience God's grace of forgiveness and healing. Through the priest acting in the person of Christ, we receive forgiveness for our sins and strength to live better. This sacrament not only cleanses our souls from sin but also restores our relationship with God and the Church.
