The Stations of the Cross is a devotion that commemorates Jesus Christ's last day on Earth as a man. The 14 stations focus on specific events of His last day, beginning with His condemnation and ending with His body being laid in the tomb.

How to Pray the Stations of the Cross

The Stations of the Cross are usually prayed by moving from one station to the next, while meditating on Christ's suffering. At each station, we pray:

  1. Name the station
  2. Pray: "We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You. Because by Your holy cross, You have redeemed the world."
  3. Meditate on the event that occurred at that station
  4. Pray the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be
  5. Pray: "Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us."
Station 1 of 14

Station 1: Jesus is Condemned to Death

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You. Because by Your holy cross, You have redeemed the world.

Reflection:

Jesus stands in silence as Pilate condemns Him to death. Though innocent, He accepts this sentence with humility, for our salvation.

Response:

Lord, help us to accept injustice in our lives with humility as You did.

Prayer:

Our Father...

Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us.

Station 2: Jesus Carries His Cross

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You. Because by Your holy cross, You have redeemed the world.

Reflection:

Jesus accepts the cross with love. He embraces this instrument of His torture and begins His journey to Calvary.

Response:

Lord, help us to carry our crosses each day and follow You.

Prayer:

Station 3: Jesus Falls the First Time

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You. Because by Your holy cross, You have redeemed the world.

Reflection:

The weight of the cross and physical weakness from torture cause Jesus to fall. Yet, He rises again and continues His journey.

Response:

Lord, when we fall into sin, help us to rise again and continue our journey.

Station 4: Jesus Meets His Mother

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You. Because by Your holy cross, You have redeemed the world.

Reflection:

Amid His suffering, Jesus meets Mary, His loving mother. Their eyes meet in a gaze of love and shared suffering.

Response:

Lord, may we feel the presence of Mary, Your Mother and ours, in our difficult moments.

Station 5: Simon of Cyrene Helps Jesus Carry His Cross

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You. Because by Your holy cross, You have redeemed the world.

Reflection:

Simon, initially forced, helps Jesus carry His cross. In this act, he becomes an example for all of us to help lighten the burdens of others.

Response:

Lord, open our eyes to see the suffering of others and give us the courage to help them carry their crosses.

Station 6: Veronica Wipes the Face of Jesus

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You. Because by Your holy cross, You have redeemed the world.

Reflection:

Veronica, moved by compassion, breaks through the crowd to wipe Jesus' bloody and sweaty face. In return, Jesus leaves the image of His face on Veronica's cloth.

Response:

Lord, give us the courage like Veronica to show compassion to those who suffer, even when it puts us at risk.

Station 7: Jesus Falls the Second Time

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You. Because by Your holy cross, You have redeemed the world.

Reflection:

Despite Simon's help, Jesus falls again under the weight of the cross. Yet, with strong determination, He rises again and continues His journey.

Response:

Lord, when we fall repeatedly into the same sins, give us the strength to rise again and continue our journey toward holiness.

Prayer:

Station 8: Jesus Meets the Women of Jerusalem

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You. Because by Your holy cross, You have redeemed the world.

Reflection:

Even in His own suffering, Jesus stops to console the women of Jerusalem who weep for Him. He reminds them to weep for themselves and their children.

Response:

Lord, teach us not to merely feel sad about Your suffering, but also to repent of our sins that caused Your suffering.

Prayer:

Station 9: Jesus Falls the Third Time

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You. Because by Your holy cross, You have redeemed the world.

Reflection:

Almost at the summit of Calvary, Jesus falls for the third time. Extreme fatigue and physical weakness nearly overcome Him, but His great love gives Him the strength to rise again.

Response:

Lord, when we feel completely crushed by the burdens of our lives, remind us of Your boundless love that gives us strength to continue.

Prayer:

Our Father...

Hail Mary...

Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us.

Station 10: Jesus is Stripped of His Garments

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You. Because by Your holy cross, You have redeemed the world.

Reflection:

Upon reaching Calvary, the soldiers strip Jesus of His garments, adding to His shame and suffering. He who wore the robe of glory in heaven, now stands naked before the crowd.

Response:

Lord, help us to strip ourselves of pride and attachment to worldly things, so that we may clothe ourselves with humility and simplicity.

Prayer:

Station 11: Jesus is Nailed to the Cross

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You. Because by Your holy cross, You have redeemed the world.

Reflection:

The soldiers nail Jesus' hands and feet to the cross, causing unspeakable pain. Yet, in the midst of His suffering, Jesus prays, 'Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.'

Response:

Lord, when we experience pain and betrayal, give us the grace to forgive as You forgave.

Prayer:

Station 12: Jesus Dies on the Cross

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You. Because by Your holy cross, You have redeemed the world.

Reflection:

After three hours hanging on the cross, Jesus cries out with a loud voice, 'It is finished!' Then He bows His head and gives up His spirit. With His death, He has completed His work of redemption.

Response:

Lord, may we never forget the price You paid for our salvation. Help us to live in a way that honors Your sacrifice.

Station 13: Jesus is Taken Down from the Cross

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You. Because by Your holy cross, You have redeemed the world.

Reflection:

Jesus' lifeless body is taken down from the cross and placed in the arms of Mary, His mother. Mary, who once held the baby Jesus with joy, now cradles her son's lifeless body with profound sorrow.

Response:

Lord, may we feel Mary's sorrow and learn from her steadfastness and strong faith amid tremendous suffering.

Station 14: Jesus is Laid in the Tomb

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You. Because by Your holy cross, You have redeemed the world.

Reflection:

Jesus' body is wrapped in a shroud and placed in a new tomb belonging to Joseph of Arimathea. A large stone is rolled in front of the entrance, and His followers depart with heavy hearts, unaware that in three days there will be a glorious resurrection.

Response:

Lord, in the dark moments of our lives, when hope seems lost, remind us that after Good Friday there is always Easter Sunday. After death there is always resurrection.

Closing Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, we have meditated on Your journey to the cross. Through Your holy cross, You have redeemed the world and opened the way of salvation for us. Help us to always remember Your infinite sacrifice and to live as Your faithful disciples. May we, by following Your footsteps in suffering, also share in Your resurrection and glory. You who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
